Chris Connelly: Herzlichen Glückwunsch zum Geburtstag, Michael! Wie geht es dir?

Michael: Gott schütze dich, mir geht es gut, danke.

Chris Connelly: Wie fühlt es sich an, 50 zu werden?

Michael: Oh, ich fühle mich gar nicht anders. Mir geht es wirklich gut – ich genieße das Leben. Ich entspanne, gerade jetzt sehe mir ich eine James Brown Show an.

Chris Connelly: Stimmt das?

Michael: Ja, ich liebe James Brown.

Chris Connelly: Wenn du auf 50 Jahre zurückschaust, wann warst du am glücklichsten?

Michael: Am glücklichsten? Oh Mann, wahrscheinlich während des Aufnehmens des Thriller und Off The Wall Albums. Das hat viel für mich bedeutet und es wurde von der Öffentlichkeit so gut angenommen, weltweit, weißt du. Es war eine Zeit, die ich sehr genoss.

Chris Connelly: Was war an dieser Erfahrung für dich so besonders? Welchen Moment hast du am besten in positiver Erinnerung?

Michael: Dass ich Musik komponieren und schreiben und sie mit Massen von Menschen auf der ganzen Welt teilen konnte und dass sie von ihnen so wunderbar aufgenommen wurde – das liebe ich. Damit verbringe ich viel Zeit. Ich liebe es, zu komponieren und Musik zu schreiben, zu tanzen und Performen und für die visuellen Medien kreative Konzepte zu entwerfen. Ich liebe es, etwas zu erschaffen.

Chris Connelly: Wenn du einen Song auswählen könntest, welcher Song wäre deine bedeutendste Leistung?

Michael: Oh, das ist eine schwere Frage. Ich liebe „We are the World“ hin zu „Billie Jean“ und „Thriller“, und so viele andere Songs.

Chris Connelly: Michael, wenn du auf deine Karriere zurückblickst, was hättest du anders gemacht?

Michael: Anders? Oh, schwer zu sagen. Ich freue mich noch immer darauf, viele großartige Sachen zu machen, deshalb ist das schwierig. Meiner ehrlichen Meinung nach, glaube ich, dass das Beste erst noch kommen wird.

Chris Connelly: Hast du für diese beeindruckende 40-jährige Karriere, die immer noch weitergeht, irgendwelche Opfer gebracht?

Michael: Viel harte Arbeit, Disziplin und Liebe und das Handwerk zu erlernen und es zu lieben. Zeit – du opferst deine Zeit und Zeitplanung. Deine Kindheit – du widmest dein ganzes Leben diesem Medium.

Chris Connelly: Wenn du alles noch einmal tun müsstest, würdest du es auf die gleiche Weise machen, oder würdest du etwas ändern?

Michael: Ich glaube, ich würde (es wieder tun). Es ist es wirklich wert – ich habe das Showgeschäft schon immer gemocht und war immer froh, Menschen mit diesem Medium glücklich zu machen. Ich liebe es, Musik, Tanz und Kunst zu zelebrieren – ich liebe es einfach.

Chris Connelly: Werden wir dich bald wieder touren sehen?

Michael: Ich habe noch Termine festgelegt, aber es ist sehr bald etwas geplant.

Chris Connelly: Besteht in der nächsten Zeit die Aussicht auf eine neue CD?

Michael: Oh ja, ich schreibe ständig. Ich liebe es, zu komponieren und all diese Dinge. Aber ich genieße es auch, meine Kinder großzuziehen und bringe ihnen Fahrrad fahren und lesen bei. Ich liebe das.

Chris Connelly: Was sollten deine Kinder über deine letzten 50 Jahre wissen? Über welche wichtigste Lektion, die du in den 50 Jahren gelernt hast, wirst du ihnen erzählen?

Michael: Welche Anerkennung es bringt, dein Handwerk mit Hingabe und Disziplin zu erlernen, weißt du, dein Handwerk wirklich zu kennen und zu verstehen.

Chris Connelly: Du weißt, die meisten Leute bekommen mit 50 mit der Post eine Karte von der Rentenversicherung. Hast du auch eine Karte bekommen?

Michael: Nicht, dass ich wüsste!

Chris Connelly: Du kannst nie sicher sein, sie finden dich, egal wo du bist!

Chris Connelly: Wen würdest du dir zu deinem 50. Geburtstag hierher wünschen, damit er sehen könnte, wie sich deine Karriere entwickelt hat?

Michael: Oh boy! Sicherlich Freunde von mir, die nicht mehr leben, die ich liebe und die mir sehr nahe waren, weißt du, Fred Astaire. Ich liebte Gene Kelly und James Brown. Diesen Menschen fühle ich mich sehr nahe, weil ich diese Art des Performens und des Teilens mit dem Zuschauer liebe – ich gebe 101 %, wenn ich auf die Bühne gehe.

Chris Connelly: Wen gibt es jetzt, der dich am meisten an dich selbst erinnert?

Michael: Oh, wow. Ich sehe Künstler, die irgendwie…. Ich hatte großen Einfluss auf ihre Arbeit und glaube, sie machen das wunderbar. Einige der jüngeren, neuen Künstler – ich denke, Chris Brown macht das wunderbar und Timberlake und all die wundervollen neuen Künstler. Ich bewundere wirklich, was sie tun. Ich freue mich für sie.

Chris Connelly: Wie wirst du deinen 50. Geburtstag feiern?

Michael: Oh, ich werde mit meinen Kindern etwas Kuchen essen und wir werden sicherlich ein paar Cartoons ansehen.

Chris Connelly: Gibt es etwas, das du dir als Geschenk wünschen würdest?

Michael: Hmm … Liebe und Freude – Frieden für die Welt, das ist, was ich möchte. Frieden und Liebe auf der Welt, weißt du.

Chris Connelly: Wissen deine Kinder, dass du ein großer Star bist? Hören sie deine Musik und gefällt sie ihnen?

Michael: Ja, das tun sie. Ich versuche zwar, ihnen nicht alles von meinen Sachen zu zeigen und vorzuspielen, denn ich weiß, wenn sie größer werden, werden sie es noch hören. Ich möchte nicht, dass sie zu sehr davon eingenommen werden. Sie bekommen es mit, wenn wir durch die Welt reisen. Wir gehen raus und es ist nicht so einfach – du weißt, die Fans und die Liebe und die Verehrung. Aber sie stellen mir viele Fragen und ich beantworte ihre Fragen.

Chris Connelly: Wünschst du dir, dass sie auch so aufwachsen wie du, in der Beziehung, dass sie auch schon sehr früh ins Showgeschäft einsteigen? Oder sagst du, wartet lieber ab und genießt eure Kindheit?

Michael: Ich lasse sie ihre Kindheit so gut wie möglich genießen. Wirklich. Ich lasse sie in die Spielhallen gehen, ins Kino und alle möglichen Dinge. Ich denke, es kommt von selbst. Ich möchte, dass sie die Dinge machen können, die ich nicht tun konnte. Ich biete ihnen viel Vergnügen dieser Art – viel Unterhaltung.

Chris Connelly: Es muss dir viel bedeuten, dass deine Kinder diese Dinge machen können, die du nicht tun konntest.

Michael: Ja – ich werde sehr emotional, wenn ich sehe, dass es ihnen gut geht. Wenn sie Karussell fahren und schreien und glücklich sind – ich werde emotional, weil ich sehe, dass sie wirklich viel Spass haben, weißt du?

Chris Connelly: Wie gut bist du mit 50 noch in Form? Beherrschst du immer noch all diese Moves und triffst all diese Noten, die wir kennen?

Michael: Noch mehr! Ich kann noch mehr … denn ich weite viele Dinge aus, die ich bisher zurückhielt und ich werde noch mehr von den Talenten teilen, die Gott mir gegeben hat, ich werde alles geben. Die Leute sehen manche dieser Dinge und fragen, warum ich das nicht der Welt zeige, die Leute wissen gar nicht, dass du so etwas machst! Und vielleicht werde ich es tun.

Chris Connelly: Ist 50 für dich eine besondere Zahl? Wie alt fühlst du dich?

Michael: Ich fühle mich weise und klug und zur gleichen Zeit sehr jung, deshalb ist es schwer zu sagen.

Chris Connelly: Du hast da draußen viele Fans, die gerne deinen 50. Geburtstag auf irgendeine Weise feiern würden – was würdest du dir wünschen, wie sie deinen Fünfzigsten zelebrieren sollen?

Michael: Oh, denkt an unseren Planeten – ernsthaft. Daran, wie man den Planeten verbessern kann. Die Erderwärmung ist mir ein wichtiges Anliegen. Macht die Welt einfach zu einem glücklicheren, besseren Ort. Es ist unser Zuhause. Ich wünsche mir, dass wir uns besser darum kümmern.

Chris Connelly: Kommt das, weil du selbst Vater bist und deine Kinder ansiehst und dir darüber Sorgen machst, was wir ihnen hinterlassen werden, wenn wir gehen?

Michael: Das – und ich hatte schon immer mitgefühlt mit dem Planeten. Manchmal werde ich sehr emotional. Ich weine, weil ich den Schmerz in der Luft fast fühlen kann. Es macht mich – ich fasse es in Worte und in Lieder und in den Tanz, ich denke, das ist, was Kunst ausmacht.

Chris Connelly: Wirst du dir diesen Tag (deinen Geburtstag) freihalten, oder wirst du wie gewöhnlich an deiner Musik und deinem Tanz arbeiten?

Michael: Ich werde arbeiten – ich arbeite gerne. Ich nehme mir nicht so viel freie Zeit.

Chris Connelly: Michael, happy birthday! How are you?

Michael: God bless you. I am fine thank you.

Chris Connelly: How do you feel turning 50?

Michael: Oh, I don’t feel any different. I am fine actually – I am just having a wonderful time. Just relaxing, I am just watching a little James Brown show right now.

Chris Connelly: Is that right?

Michael: I love James Brown, yes.

Chris Connelly: As you look back on 50 years, when do you think you were the happiest?

Michael: The happiest? Oh boy, probably the recording of “Thriller” and the “Off the Wall” albums. That meant very much to me and seemed to be received so beautifully by the public and the world, you know. It was a time I enjoyed it very much.

Chris Connelly: What was the most special thing about that experience for you? What moment do you remember most happily?

Michael: That I could compose and write music and get to share it with the masses and the people around the world and to have them to receive it so beautifully – I love that. That’s what I spend a lot of time doing. I love composing and writing music and dancing and performing and conceptualizing creatively for visual mediums. I love to create.

Chris Connelly: If you could pick one song, which one song is your greatest achievement?

Michael: Oh boy, that’s a hard one. I love ‘We are the world’ to ‘Billie Jean,’ to ‘Thriller,’ to so many different songs.

Chris Connelly: As you look back on your career Michael, what would you have done differently?

Michael: Differently? Oh boy, that’s a hard one. I am still l looking forward to doing a lot of great things, so that’s hard. I think the best is yet to come in my true humble opinion.

Chris Connelly: Is there anything you sacrificed by having this amazing career, 40 years and counting?

Michael: A lot of hard work, discipline and love and learning about the craft and loving it. Time — sacrificing your time and your scheduling. Your childhood – giving up your life for the medium.

Chris Connelly: If you had it to do over again, would you do it the same way or would you do anything differently?

Michael: I think I would, I think I would. It is very much worth it – I have I always loved show business and have always enjoyed making people happy through that medium. I love the celebration of music and dance and art – I just love it.

Chris Connelly: Are we going to see you tour any time soon?

Michael: I don’t have any dates set, but we are planning something soon. Yes we are.

Chris Connelly: Any chance for another CD or recorded music in the near future.

Michael: Oh yes, I am writing all the time. I love composing and the whole thing. But I am also raising my children and enjoying it and teaching them to ride bicycles and how to read. I love it.

Chris Connelly: What do you want your children to know about what your 50 years has been? What will you tell them was the most important lesson you learned in your 50 years?

Michael: What dedication and discipline and learning your craft, you know, the rewards it brings, to really know and understand your craft well.

Chris Connelly: You know when most people turn 50, the AARP finds them and sends them an AARP card in the mail. Have you gotten an AARP card in the mail?

Michael: Not that I know of! (laugh)

Chris Connelly: You never know, they can find you wherever you are!

Chris Connelly: Who do you wish could be here right now as you turn 50 to see what your career has become?

Michael: Oh boy! Probably friends of mine who aren’t alive anymore who I love and were close to me, you know, Fred Astaire. I loved Gene Kelly and I loved James Brown. These are people I feel very close to because it is very much the way I enjoy performing, and giving to the people – I give 101 percent when I go on stage, you know.

Chris Connelly: Who do you see now who reminds you the most of you?

Michael: Oh boy, wow. I see artists that kind of… I have been a great influence on their work and I think they are doing a wonderful job. Some of the younger newer artists – I think Chris Brown is doing a wonderful job and Timberlake and all these wonderful new artists. I really admire what they are doing. Very happy for them.

Chris Connelly: How do you plan to celebrate your 50th birthday?

Michael: Oh, I’ll just have a little cake with my children and we’ll probably watch some cartoons.

Chris Connelly: Is there anything you are hoping to get as a present?

Michael: Hmmm…Love and joy – peace for the world, that’s what I want. Peace for the world and love, you know.

Chris Connelly: Do your children understand what a big star you are? Have they listened to your music and do they enjoy it?

Michael: They do. I try my best not to show them my stuff and play them a lot of it, because I know they will grow up to hear it. I don’t want them to get too caught up. They see it when we go around the world. We go out and it’s not so easy – you know the fans and the love and the adoration. But they ask me a lot of questions and I answer their questions.

Chris Connelly: Would you like them to have the same sort of upbringing you had in terms of getting into show business at an early age? Or do you want to say whoa, take a minute, enjoy your childhood?

Michael: I am letting them enjoy their childhood as much as possible. I really do. I let them go to the arcade and go to the movies and do things. I think that comes naturally. I want them to get to do the kind of things I didn’t get to do. So I fill them with a lot of enjoyment that way – a lot of amusement you know.

Chris Connelly: It must mean a lot to you to have your kids do the things you couldn’t do.

Michael: Yes – I get pretty emotional when I see them having a wonderful time. When they are on a ride and they are screaming and they are happy – it makes me emotional, cause I see they are having a real good time, you know?

Chris Connelly: What kind of shape are you in at 50? Can you still do all the moves and hit all the notes that we remember?

Michael: More! I can do more…because I am expanding a lot of the avenues that I was holding back and I am just going to share more of the gifts that God has given me and just let it all hang out. People see some of the things I do and say why don’t you show this to the world, people don’t know you do these things! And maybe I will.

Chris Connelly: Does 50 feel like a big number to you? How old to do you feel you are?

Michael: I feel very wise and sage but at the same time very young, so it’s hard to say.

Chris Connelly: You have a lot of fans out there who would like to come out with some way to celebrate your birthday – what would you like them to do, to commemorate your 50th?

Michael: Oh, to think about our planet – seriously. I mean how to make it a better planet. The global warming issue is a concern to me very much. Just make the world a better, happier place. It’s our home. I’d like to see us do a better job of taking care of it.

Chris Connelly: Is that because you are a father and you look at your kids and worry about what we are leaving for them when we go away?

Michael: That – and I have always felt compassion for the planet. Sometime I just start to get emotional. I cry because I can almost feel the pain in the air. So it makes me – I put it in words and in song and in dance I think that is what artistry is.

Chris Connelly: Will you take the day off (for your birthday) or will you be working like you normally do on your music or dance?

Michael: I will be working – love to work. I don’t take too much time off.
